[ARCHIVED] Mosquito Spraying Begins April 1st

The Camden County Public Works Department, through new contractor Vector Disease Control International (VDCI), will begin this season’s mosquito spraying in Camden County on Thursday, April 1, 2021. The mission of Mosquito Control is to reduce levels of pestiferous and disease capable mosquitoes in an effort to protect human health, improve quality of life, and minimize any associated adverse impacts to the local economy, including agriculture, tourism, and others. The Camden County Board of Commissioners awarded this contract at their February 2, 2021, regular meeting.

“We are excited to begin our partnership with VDCI for mosquito control services,” said Public Works Director Shalana McNamee. “If Camden County residents notice the VDCI logo on trucks spraying in their neighborhoods, they should be aware that they are providing mosquito control services to our community.”

Vector Disease Control International LogoAs part of their services, VDCI has begun placing several types of traps throughout our county. VDCI relies heavily on surveillance for larval and adult mosquitos in order to effectively provide control. VDCI will be using a combination of strategies including trap surveillance and disease testing, field inspections to identify breeding habitats, habitat remediation, natural predator placement, and larvicide and adulticide chemical applications. Additionally, service requests from citizens help guide their efforts to ensure effectiveness in meeting the needs of the community.

VDCI will be providing the county with additional services to include weekly rain gauge monitoring to target larval breeding sites, public education programs, disease and species testing and identification, barrier treatments, monthly and annual reporting, plus other services as needed. Residents may notice VDCI logos on trucks with mounted tables for flow systems that will be GPS tracking all treatments provided. The company provides scientifically sound mosquito surveillance and control programs based on the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for managing quality mosquito control programs.

Service requests may be made by calling 912-217-6300, ext. 1 at any time after April 1, 2021, and should receive the appropriate course of action, larviciding and/or spraying, within 48 hours, weather permitting. If your community or neighborhood is in a private or gated subdivision and you want to have treatment, please contact Camden County Public Works Office at 912-576-3028 to ensure that approval to treat your area has been obtained.
