1. Does Camden County Have a Leash Law?

Yes. All pets must be restrained to their owner's property by fence, leash, or other appropriate measure. Animals may not leave the owner's property unless properly leashed and accompanied by a responsible person. Animals chained, tethered or fenced outside must have a weatherproof shelter. Waste from the animals must not be allowed to accumulate causing an annoyance or health hazard.

Loose dogs are a public health and safety hazard. Since it is impossible to determine how well trained any individual dog is, Camden County requires all dogs be leashed and under the care & control of a competent person. Please remember when walking your dog(s) you are required to remove and dispose of any feces your animal deposits.

2. What Should I Do if I am Bitten by an Animal?

All animal bites should be washed with soap and water immediately. You should contact your Doctor, and Animal Control. All animal bites should be reported to Animal Control within 24 hours of incident at 912-576-7395 during business hours on weekdays. Contact the Camden County E-911 Center Non-Emergency number at 912-729-1442 on weekends or after 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. 

3. Are cats, as well as dogs, required to be vaccinated against rabies?

By Georgia law, dogs, cats, and ferrets must get rabies vaccination when they are twelve weeks of age or older. Rabies vaccinations are only recognized in Georgia when performed by a licensed veterinarian. Call your veterinarian for more details on rabies shots for your pets. If your pet is bitten or scratched by a wild animal notify your veterinarian immediately.

4. Is it Normal For Raccoons to be Out in the Daytime?

While raccoons are nocturnal animals, they do sometimes forage in the daylight hours. They feed with the tides, and the moon phases. They are also opportunistic feeders, meaning if you feed animals outside and leave food out continuously you may unwittingly be attracting raccoons or other wildlife to your yard.

Pick up any uneaten animal food within 30 minutes, and do not throw scraps or leftovers in the yard or areas near your residence.

5. What Can I do About the Wildlife In, Under, or Around My House?

Animal Control does not typically remove wild animals from homes or businesses. To help prevent wildlife from being attracted to your house or yard, do not leave food of any kind outside. If you feed cats/dogs outside, remove uneaten food after 30 minutes. Placing screens over chimneys, and attic vents help reduce the risks associated with bat colonies, squirrels and other wildlife entering the home through those openings. Do not let yard waste/debris stay piled up in your yard; it could attract rodents which will attract snakes. The removal of nuisance wildlife should only be done by a licensed trapper or the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA-DNR). Contact GA-DNR at 912-264-7237.

6. I Can No Longer Keep my Pet. Will You Come Pick it Up?

No, Animal Control does not pick up owner surrender pets. We encourage owners to seek help keeping the pet or finding it a new home.

7. My Pet is Sick, Will You Come Look at It?

No. Animal Control Officers are not veterinarians. While we are familiar with some diseases, or conditions, we cannot dispense medical advice. 

We encourage all pet owners to see proper veterinary care for their pets.

8. You are not going to hurt the animal, are you?

Animal Control does not use any equipment inherently harmful to any animals. 

9. Where is your holding facility?

The Camden County Animal Control holding facility is located at the Animal Control offices, 1144 Godley Avenue in Woodbine.

10. Will animals be posted on social media?

Yes, we share found dogs on social media. Follow our Facebook and Instagram accounts to see these animals. 

11. What happens if owners do not come forward?

There is very limited space available for holding dogs. We strongly encourage interested residents to assist with finding foster homes or permanent homes through adoption. 

12. What is currently being done with the funds the humane society used to receive?

 Camden County Animal Control is using the $167,750 in the FY 2024 budget to provide food and shelter for the stray dogs of Camden County. 

13. Why won’t you pick-up a dog for 48 hours?

Many dogs are found in the neighborhood they live in, and they have the best chance of getting back home if they are retained in their neighborhood. Animal Control is very scary for dogs and often a perfectly friendly dog can be mistaken for aggressive due to the circumstances. We want to give the pet an opportunity to find his/her way home. Over 70% of dogs return home within 48 hours if they remain in the area. 

14. Once a dog or cat is picked up by Animal Control, where is it taken?

The Camden County Animal Control holding facility is located at the Animal Control offices, 1144 Godley Avenue in Woodbine.

15. What’s the plan for cats? Is there a plan in place for cats?

Camden County, in partnership with the Best Friends Organization, has a TNVR program. 

TNVR is a universal term that can mean  Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR), Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), or Shelter-Neuter-Return (SNR). TNVR is the most effective, and humane, method of controlling feral cat population growth. TNVR should not be used to create cat colonies but should instead be used as cat colony prevention, reducing overall numbers over time.
